In the Early Years and Year 1 phonics are taught daily following the 'Letters and Sounds' programme.
In the Early Years phonics is taught in whole class sessions, focusing on Phase 1 and 2 in Nursery and 3 and 4 in Reception. During Year 1 children are separated into groups based on the phase of phonics that they are working on.
This way of working is continued within Year 2, with children in Year 2 working on a combination of phonics and spelling rules as directed by the National Curriculum.
In KS2 there are small intervention groups who work to ensure children who have not yet passed the phonics test are given extra phonics input.
From Year 2 onwards there are timetabled weekly spelling sessions. We use the 'Read, Write, Inc Spelling' programme to support children's learning of spellings in class. Across all the phases of the school, children are taught to spell by understanding the spelling patterns and pairs of letters that make sounds in words to enhance their spelling skills.
