Phonics

Our phonics programme is Read, Write, Inc. We will be teaching your child the sounds of the letters, how to blend the sounds into words to read, how to write the letters and how to spell words using the sounds they have learnt.

It is important that you support your child at home to help them to become fluent readers and confident writers.

Things you can do to support your child:

  • Read your child’s reading book with them at least five times a week.
  • Ask your child simple questions about the stories you read to them to check they have listened and understood the story.
  • Practise any phonics homework that is sent home for 10 minutes every day.
  • Practise writing the letters of your child’s name with them until they can write it without having to copy it.
  • Practise writing the letters of the alphabet, these should be written in lower case rather than upper case and be formed correctly according to the school policy and the sheets you have been given. Please ask your teacher for more advice if necessary.
  • When your child is able to recognise and read sounds in words, practise spelling simple words with your child.
  • When your child is able to successfully spell some words encourage them to write simple sentences such as 'I am a cat'.  If they are able to do this extend the sentence e.g. 'I am a cat and I can run and jump'.  When writing ensure your child always uses a pencil an draw thick lines on the paper for them to practise writing on.
