British Values

SMSC is the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development of our children.  Every school in England has  duty to promote SMSC, and particularly the British Values of democracy, the Rule of Law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

At Godwin Primary SMSC underpins all aspects of our curriculum.  Weekly assemblies regularly promote children's understanding of both the school and British values.  This includes identifying values in both religious and non-religious stories and relating them to how they have to behave and live both in school and the world.

In previous assemblies, for example, children have identified examples of democracy in school:

'We get to vote for who gets to be our school councillor' (Yr 2)

'My teacher lets us vote for what book we want to read at the end of the day' (Yr 1).

Similarly, they have related the rule of law to our school behaviour policy, identifying that they receive rewards and consequences for following the school rules and values. They also understand that they have freedom of choice but this brings with it a responsibility for the consequences of their choices.
