Music

We believe that music should be a core part of the primary curriculum and our children's experience in school and that children should have access to a high-quality music education throughout the school. We support this by ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument (dejembe drums in Year 2 and fifes in year 5) and that all children are given the opportunity to listen to a range of music, perform in a variety of venues and attend performances.

Music is an integral part of many of our whole school celebrations and events.  Each year there are events where children perform songs, with their year groups, to the rest of the school and invited members of the school community.  This includes:

- Our Annual Harvest Festival

- Christmas nativities - Years N, R, 2 and 4

- Christmas carols in the community

- Year 6 performance at the O2 as part of 'Young Voices'

- Year 6 end of year/school production

- Whole school celebration

To support the development of other areas of music the school uses the English Model Music Curriculum resources from 'Charanga' as a starting point for music teaching (although as with all schemes we encourage teachers to use this as a basis rather than a direct lesson plan).  The units cover a range of music from different cultures, genres and eras.  It encourages the development of listening skills and supports the playing of instruments - particularly the glockenspiel and recorder. Children will soon be able to access the Charanga programme from home to be able  practise the music skills they are learning in class. Lessons are timetabled weekly between 40 minutes to an hour, with additional music taught in KS1 and KS2 singing assemblies on Fridays.

Additionally, in Year 2 children recieve lessons in playing the djembe drums from the Community Music Service - CMS - and in  Year 4 children receive lessons in 'Musicianship', from the CMS.  This develops their skills in preparation for Year 5 where children all learn to play a musical instrument as part of the Whole Class Vocal and Instrumental Teaching programme (WCVIT).  This year children are learning to play fifes; previously this has included violins, guitars, trombones, clarinets, flutes and French horns.  Children are encouraged to continue learning their instrument in Year 6 with small group lessons provided by the CMS. We currently have 7 children participating in flute lessons in Year 6.

All of Year 6 are given the opportunity to perform at the O2 as part of 'Young Voices' with weekly music lessons teaching them the skills, harmonies and building on their music reading skills from Year 5.

The school also has a choir.  The choir takes part in many events, including the borough music festival (performing to other schools), performing to the rest of the school and singing in the local community.
