Music is an integral part of many of our whole school celebrations and events. Each year there are events where children perform songs, with their year groups, to the rest of the school and invited members of the school community. This includes:
- Our Annual Harvest Festival
- Christmas nativities - Years N, R, 2 and 4
- Christmas carols in the community
- part of 'special week'
- Year 6 end of year/school production
- Whole school celebration
To support the development of other areas of music the school uses resources from 'Charanga' as a starting point for music teaching (although as with all schemes we encourage teachers to use this as a basis rather than a direct lesson plan). The units cover a range of music from different cultures, genres and eras. It encourages the development of listening skills and supports the playing of instruments - particularly the glockenspiel and recorder. Children will soon be able to access the Charanga programme from home to be able practise the music skills they are learning in class.
Additionally, in Year 4 children receive lessons in 'Musicianship', from the Community Music Service - CMS. This develops their skills in preparation for Year 5 where children all learn to play a musical instrument as part of the Whole Class Vocal and Instrumental Teaching programme (WCVIT). This year children are learning to play trombones, clarinets and trumpets; previously this has included violins, guitars, flutes and French horns. Children are encouraged to continue learning their instrument in Year 6 with small group lessons provided by the CMS.
The school also has a choir. The choir takes part in many events, including the borough music festival (performing to other schools), singing in the local community and larger events such as Young Voices at the O2.
