- How will the school prepare and support my child when they join the school, transfer to a new school or move on to secondary school?
How will the school prepare and support my child when they join the school, transfer to a new school or move on to secondary school?
On entry to nursery / reception
- There are meetings for parents and carers of children joining reception or nursery, which take place at the school during the summer term before children start school
- Nursery children will be invited to come in to the school for a ‘stay and play’ session with their parents or carers before they start. This gives an opportunity for information to be given to school staff if your child has additional needs or if you are concerned about any areas of their development
Children transferring from a different school
- The head teacher or deputy head teacher will meet each parent / carer and child individually to complete the paperwork for admission to school, regardless of the time of year or age of the child. During this meeting you will be able to speak to them about any needs that your child has. The SENCo may also be present at this meeting if you have informed the school that your child has SEND
- If your child is joining Godwin from a previous school, the school will send the records they have about the child and our SENCo or Head Teacher will speak to relevant staff there by telephone if further information is required
- Parents and children will have a tour of the school when they come to enrol the child
Children with additional needs who are transferring within Godwin to a new class in September
- At the end of the school year (July), children will meet their new teachers and will have some sessions working with their new teachers in their new classes before the summer holidays. Children who have additional needs may need to spend extra time with their new teacher or extra time in their new classroom. This will be arranged by staff. Some children may be given a book of photographs to look at over the summer holiday so that they are familiar with names of staff when they return in September
Transfer to secondary school for children with SEND
- When a child with complex additional needs is transferring to secondary school, transition meetings may be held between staff from both schools. Parents and carers will usually be invited to these meetings. In addition to this, meetings are held between the SENCo at Godwin and all secondary school SENCos so that individual children can be discussed and their needs explained before the child transfers from Year 6 to Year 7
