How will I know how my child is doing?

We know that you will want to know how your child is doing in school and the progress they are making. At Godwin, we realise that communication between parents and carers is vital in order to support all children and especially those with additional needs. There are several different ways that you can receive information on the progress of your child:

  • Parents’ evenings – these take place termly. You will be able to meet with your child’s teacher by booking an appointment for parents’ evening. If the date or time available is not convenient then teachers are happy to arrange alternative times to meet with you, or to talk to you on the phone to discuss how your child is doing
  • Home / school communication books – children who are unable to tell people at home what they have been doing at school are sometimes given a home school communication book. Adults in school will put a note in the book two or three times a week and adults at home will be able to write notes to school staff with any questions or information that school needs to know. Adults at home are asked to initial any comments made by school staff so we know they have been seen. School staff will reply to any comments made by adults at home. Home school communication books are set up after discussion with the SENCo, parents and carers and staff in the child’s class, and if appropriate, with the agreement of the child involved face or by telephone
  • Daily opportunities to talk to school staff: Teaching assistants are available at all school entrances every day and parents / carers are able to leave messages with them for staff in class if they need to. If you need to talk to your child’s teacher or another member of staff, please leave a message with the TA on duty, call the office or contact Alison Lines (parent support advisor) and a time will be arranged for you to do this, either face to Parent support advisor (PSA): Our parent support advisor (Alison Lines) is available to all parents and carers to answer any queries regarding your child. She is contactable via the school office, on a Friday morning, when there is a weekly coffee morning, or before and after school when she is often in the playground
  • Coffee mornings: Every Friday morning, Alison Lines runs a coffee morning for all parents and carers. This is between 8:45 and 10:30 in the technology room. This is a chance to meet other parents and carers. Alison is available to answer questions about the school and can pass messages on to staff in class.
  • Review meetings: some families will have regular meetings with the SENCo to discuss the progress of their child. On occasions, people from outside agencies such as the EP or Speech and language therapist may also attend these meetings if they are involved with your child.
  • Home visits: In some circumstances, Alison Lines and / or the SENCo can visit the home for meetings. If you are unable to get to school due to illness, disability or other difficulties, please contact the office and the possibility of a home visit can be discussed.
