How will school support my child if they have special educational needs or disabilities?

The support offered will be tailored to the specific needs of your child. Support will be through a combination of the following:

  • Individual target setting
  • IEPs (Individual Education Plans) when necessary
  • Pupil voice – listening to the views of the child
  • Differentiation
  • Interventions
  • Adult support from Class teachers, teaching assistants and other adults with relevant knowledge and training, encouraging and building on the independence of the child
  • Access to lunchtime clubs where activities are organised for children who find it difficult to be in the playground during lunchtime play
  • At times, outside agency support may be used e.g. speech and language therapists or an educational psychologist
  • Occasionally children may require support from one of the specialist settings in Barking and Dagenham, and will attend an alternative setting for a period of time, returning full time to Godwin once they have completed the intervention. This is usually for children who are experiencing social, emotional and / or mental health difficulties and are not making progress in their learning due to emotional and behaviour issues.
