Maths Focus:

Addition and 1 less/fewer

Session 1:

• Estimation: place a number of items either on the table or on the floor and ask your child to make a sensible estimate as to how many there are. Ask your child how you can find out how many items there actually are. Then count them. Repeat. (Up to 5/10).

• Recap forming 2, 3 & 4 correctly – model first before getting your child to write. Move onto 5.

• Recap with your child the different words for addition: add, more, and, plus, altogether makes.

• Adult rolls 2 dice. Tell your child you are going to add these two amounts together and you are going to use counting materials to help.

2. Ask them which amount to get out first, then what to do next etc. With their help record the calculation.

Session 2:

• Addition using counting materials – create some addition calculations (up to 5/10). Read one with your child. Ask them to tell you what they will do first, next …… Then ask your child to use the counting materials to help them find the total. Emphasise the need to count on from the first number and not to start with one. Ask them to write the calculation and the total. Repeat with a different addition calculation.

Session 3:

Session 4:

• 2D shapes: recap name and properties (side, corner/vertex/vertices, flat, curved, straight) and place shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle, square) into a bag. Describe the hidden shape for your child to identify. “Which shape am I?” Repeat until all four shapes have been described and identified. 

• Recap forming the digits the children are finding challenging   model first before getting your child to write.  Move onto 8.

• Recite: Five Superheroes

Five superheroes ready to fly,

Here comes the villain, stop that guy!

This superhero can save the day.

Off she flies- up, up and away!

Four Superheroes ………… etc.

• Children use fingers to take away one each time and use language: 1 less/fewer than 5 is 4.

• Children make a tower of 5/10. “What is 1 less/ fewer than 10?” What do we need to do? Children then take away 1 and use language, 1 less/fewer than 10 is 9. Continue to zero.

• Do the same with the digit cards (these can be hand written on paper if you do not have any), make a number line to 5/10/20.

     Adult can model how to find the answer or ask the children how

     to find the answer/what to do- emphasising the terminology

     count back, not as many & leaves

• Sing ‘5 little monkeys swinging in a tree’ - use the language of 1 less/fewer, take away, leaves.
