Superheroes!

Session 1:

• Play superhero music- who/what does it make you think of?
• Look at some pictures of different superheroes (use pictures in attached document below to support).
• Look at specific superheroes and discuss what their superpowers are and the gadgets they have.
• Ask your child to talk about their favourites, giving reasons why.

Creative activity - create your own superhero!

• Get your child to choose their own superhero name, special power, outfit, pose and sounds their actions will make. Adult to support and develop their ideas. 
• Then see if they can draw a picture of themselves as a superhero whilst listening to the superhero music.

Session 2:

• Recap with your child their new superhero, it's name and their powers.
• As you discuss ask your child to describe it, e.g. what does the buttons on the belt do etc.
• Then support your child to write a sentence about themselves as a superhero.

Adult to rehearse and model writing a sentence first: ‘I am…..’

Then get your child to write the same sentence but with their superhero name.

Do the same for “I can…”

Or

Children rehearse their sentence and write: ‘I am… and I can…… but add a bit more detail, e.g. run really fast/ jump very high.

Creative activity:

• Make a medallion/amulet- cut out a circle. Collage/decorate using collage materials. 

Session 3:

• Recap own superhero.
• Recap what they have already written.
• Compose and write another sentence about their superhero. This could be about something else that they can do or maybe what outfit they are wearing. See if they can write more than one sentence or use “and”.

Creative activity:

• Make a superhero mask based on their own superhero. You could use half of a paper plate or a template for a mask with different collage materials to complete. 

Session 4:

• Today you have a superhero mission to complete - You must save the people from the erupting volcano!
• Make an erupting volcano with your child.

Ingredients for erupting volcano

• Plastic cup
• Water
• 3-4 tbs of baking soda at least
• 1 tsp of washing-up liquid
• 1/2 oz to 2 oz of washable paint, depending on the intensity of the colour desired
• 1 cup (8 oz) of vinegar to start with per eruption.

Start off by combining the “base ingredients.” Put the water inside of the plastic cup. Fill it about 2/3 full.  Add the baking soda, washing-up liquid and washable paint. Make a mound around the cup using damp sand in a tray and turn it into a mountain. Place a couple of Lego figures in the tray.

Then pour the vinegar into the cup and watch the volcano erupt.

• Once made discuss with your child how their superhero will undertaken and complete the mission.  

Creative activity:

• Ask your child to then paint/draw a picture of themselves undertaking the mission. Discuss what they could include; e.g. background, detail, characters etc.
