Maths
Today we will be looking at writing decimals and understanding the place value of each digit.
Warm up with the flashback 4 and then check your answers at the beginning of the video. Continue watching the video to help you understand tenths and hundredths. Have a go at the worksheet below https://vimeo.com/403297865
Why not ask an adult to give you some decimal numbers, or write your own, and work out the place value of each digit?
Writing
Today we will be creating a setting description to build our story. Think about where your story is going to be set. It could be somewhere that you have been or somewhere more mysterious. Have you read a story recently that had a really intriguing setting? Books are a great way to get ideas!
To help you build the detail you need have a go at drawing your setting. Use the prompts on the power point for some ideas about what to include. Using a thesaurus is a great way to find other words to use www.thesaurus.com/. Remember not all synonyms will always make sense with what you're writing about so check you know what the word means.
When you have found lots of vocabulary, write a paragraph to describe your setting. Make sure you include correct punctuation!
Read it to an adult and see if they can build the image in their head! Can't wait to read them on the Purple Mash Blog!
Geography
Yesterday (8th June) was World Ocean Day. Can you name the world's oceans? Have a go at locating them on the sheet below.
You might like to explore the oceans and countries on google Earth (https://earth.google.com/) or search for images on Kidrex (https://www.alarms.org/kidrex/). *Remember to follow the rules of online safety and show an adult what you are doing*
The ocean biome is fascinating but much of it is undiscovered! The ocean habitat is the largest on Earth and covers around 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Can you name any species that live in these habitats? Unfortunately, due to climate change and plastic pollution their beautiful habitats are under threat so something needs to be done to protect it.
Read through the ppt below to learn about World Ocean Day where the theme this year is 'Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean'.
An innovation is a new idea or method and sustainable means causing little or no damage to the environment and therefore able to continue for a long time.
We would like you to create your own innovation that could be used to reduce plastic pollution or reduce water waste to protect the ocean. It could be something that you could use at home, school or even on a bigger scale!
If you would like to see and learn more about the ocean habitat, David Attenborough's Blue Planet and Blue Planet II documentaries are a great watch! Always ask an adult before watching. There is also a reading comprehension and a world oceans quiz if you would like to have a go.
Make sure you upload your work to the Purple Mash blog! We look forward to seeing your innovations :)
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
