Curriculum
At Godwin, our vision for physical education is that all children will leave having enjoyed, and been inspired by, a range of sporting experiences creating a healthy, active child. PE lessons are taught in two one hour sessions during the week – one outdoor session (games or outdoor adventure activities) and one indoor session (dance or gymnastics) - please see Year group pages to find out your child's PE days. To support our teachers in the delivery of these high-quality lessons, we use an online scheme called Complete PE which ensures there is clear progression in PE throughout the school.
In line with the National Curriculum, children in Years 3, 4 & 5 attend swimming sessions weekly for one term per year. These lessons are delivered by certified swimming instructors at Becontree Heath Leisure Centre.
This year lessons are on Friday mornings. Year 5 will go during the autumn term, Year 4 during the spring term and Year 3 in the summer term.
We also have a long, well established link with The Royal Ballet. The Royal Ballet come in once a week for half a term in the autumn to teach our Year 3 children ballet. From this, children who are seen to have potential in ballet, are selected to have further lessons, provided free of charge by The Royal Ballet school, in order to develop their skills further. Children have the opportunity to see ballet performances and for those selected, and remaining on the programme until Year 6, perform in Covent Garden at The Royal Opera House.
To ensure our children get regular opportunities to increase their fitness each class also accesses our mile track for two fifteen-minute sessions per week. During this time, children are encouraged to walk briskly or run round the mile track in KS2 playground with the understanding that 7 laps allows them to move for a mile.
We also take part annually in the TCS Mini London Marathon.
Within the classroom, the children complete at least three ten-minute physical workout sessions during the week using Tenergy or Just Dance.
We are also always looking for opportunities to inspire our children; this includes trips to the Olympic Park or other sporting venues to see live sports, bringing in inspirational people involved in sport and developing links with local community clubs and teams. We have been able to offer the children opportunities to see national teams compete in Wheelchair Rugby and Hockey, and were thrilled to host a visit from Joe Wickes - The Body Coach in June 2024.
After School Clubs
We offer a wide variety of after school sports clubs run by members of staff or outside agencies.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
